Doctors of the World is an international humanitarian organization that provides emergency and long-term medical care to vulnerable populations while fighting for equal access to healthcare worldwide.

Our Principles:

1. Affirming access to health care as a human right
2. Providing direct access to quality health services
3. Working with local partners to ensure sustainability and effectiveness
4. Fighting for those excluded from care
5. Exposing barriers to healthcare through data collection and testimonies

Our Values:

Doctors of the World values health as a fundamental right and is committed to improving access to quality medical care for people affected by poverty, disease, conflict, natural disasters or health disparities. We provide medical care under all circumstances, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, age, political beliefs, or legal status. Standing against discrimination, MdM bears witness to health inequity worldwide.

History

history

Doctors of the World (Médecins du Monde/MdM) was founded by 15 doctors that believed in bearing witness and providing direct access to medical care for the world’s most vulnerable and marginalized people. Doctors of the World opened its doors in Paris in March 1980 when a group of doctors who co-founded Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières/MSF) branched off to establish MdM.

The first doctors were sent to Afghanistan, El Salvador, and Armenia to improve care for populations lacking medical services at a time of crisis and war. In 1986, Doctors of the World established its first medical clinic in France for migrant populations excluded from healthcare access. The following year, Doctors of the World launched a harm reduction initiative, establishing the first free and anonymous HIV testing center in Paris.

In 1989, Doctors of the World Spain was founded and the International Network was born. Currently, there are 15 branches on four continents, including North and South America, Europe and Asia. Today, we serve more than 4 million people through 350 programs in over 80 countries around the world.
