Interview with Bashar Kailani: Field Coordinator in Ukraine
Already weakened from years of economic austerity, the Greek economy is experiencing a new economic recession due to the pandemic. The population in Greece is once again facing unemployment, increased risk of poverty and uncertainty for the future. Young people, patients with chronic illnesses, the elderly, people with disabilities, and poor households have faced extreme social isolation and exclusion since last year.

At MDM’s Open Polyclinic in Athens, we continue to offer accessible, free, and quality health care to all individuals in Athens facing serious socio-economic problems including, most distressingly, children living in the streets.
Our team provides primary medical care and psychosocial/social support services to members of vulnerable social groups in Athens. Patients are monitored by doctors at the Polyclinic, where they can also receive free laboratory tests through a network of referral laboratories and hospitals, always with the appropriate follow up. The Open Polyclinics allowed MDM to treat and serve more than 20,000 people in Athens in 2019, the most recent year for which statistics are available.

Our goal for 2021 is to strengthen these programs, responding to the evolving needs of Greek society and remaining fiercely committed to our founding principle that healthcare is a fundamental right of every human being.
