New Jersey & Maternal Mortality

New Jersey has the fourth highest level of maternal mortality in the nation

New Jersey has a maternal mortality ratio of 46.4 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births annually

46.4

maternal deaths per 100,000 live births annually

131.8

Black maternal deaths per 100,000 live births annually

34.7

white maternal deaths per 100,000 live births annually

While cases of maternal mortality around the world have been trending downward, the numbers in the United States have steadily increased. Moreover, in the United States, huge disparities exist within populations, with Black and Native American/Indigenous women at much higher risk of maternal mortality than white women. Nationwide, Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy related complications and Indigenous women are two to three times as likely to die than white women.

In New Jersey, there are 46.4 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, which is the fourth worst in the nation. Additionally, in New Jersey Black women face higher levels of maternal mortality and morbidity due to systemic and racial inequalities. This is unacceptable.
