While cases maternal mortality around the world have continued to trend downward, the numbers in the United States have continued to increase. Moreover, in the United States, huge disparities exist within populations, with Black and Native American/Indigenous women at much higher risk of maternal mortality and morbidity than white women. Nationwide, Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy related complications and Indigenous and Native American women are twice as likely to die than white women.

In Georgia, there are 66.3 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. It has the 2nd highest level of maternal mortality outcomes in the nation and Black women in Georgia have higher levels of maternal mortality due to systemic and racial inequalities.
